I know the temps are coming back down but last week it was in the high 80s and it felt like high summer. We were sticky, we had a hard time staying outside without sprinklers, splash pads and 10,394 popsicles.
We started reading The Wind in the Willows aloud to kick things off and have enjoyed playing out the lives of the little animals who live on the river. The themes in the book really strike a cord for adults as well as children and it fills me with joy that I’m giving my babies the gift of these stories to carry with them throughout their lives.
The theme of leaving and unleaving is huge. The story talks about coming back to a room that isn’t perfect or fancy but is yours. Nothing feels as nostalgic as this and nothing feels as comforting as having a home that feels so good to recall in your memory. I’ve spent the entire week dreaming of ways to recreate this. Building an environment that feels so wonderful that it’s painfully beautiful to recall in memories 20 years from now.
Summer is particularly nostalgic. Stefano finished up his church program last week and promptly slept in until 8:40 the following day. My husband and I joked that it was reminiscent of our teenage years on the first day of summer; school is out and you’re finally free of responsibilities. It’s that metaphorical exhale of complete freedom and relaxation that most of us are chasing in adulthood and will probably never get again, sadly.
So what are we wearing to usher our children into the free days of summer? I still want to feel like a fashion girl but I also need to be able to move, and breathe in the heat. I’m doing a lot of bermuda shorts this year with fancier tops and fun shoes.
After roughly 5-6ish years, waking up and coming out of the baby fog; I realized I hadn’t shown my stomach since my pre-mom days. Recently, I read that sunlight is great for your stomach, gut health, digestion, etc. it’s also the hottest time of the year so I asked myself why I’m covering up - regardless of our age, if you have one baby or six, mom’s can wear crop tops too.
I’m wearing some longer skirts, bermudas and bike shorts to baseball games and some elevated tanks with jeans to my kids’ nature classes. See below.
Whatever phase you’re at in your womanhood I hope you’re staying cool in the heat and enjoying the feeling of freedom as summer kicks off. Love you all. Xoxo,
Megan
