Bees. Bees. Bees.
One thing people leave out when romanticizing late summer excursions are the bees and their aggression. I don’t know if they are trying to get one last hurrah or what. I’m definitely getting my last hurrahs of summer by using some of my favorite summer pieces in a more seasonally “fall appropriate” way. Maybe I’m reluctant to admit the temperatures will soon be dropping or maybe I’m trying to prove to my husband just how economical I can be in wearing my clothes year-round.
Let’s talk about texture here and types of fabric. I like taking two textures that typically would be in different seasons and mixing them. I’ve focused heavily on corduroy or wool paired with cotton and crochet pieces. It gives enough friction to your look by just existing, hence you don’t need to TRY to look effortless.
CORDUROY. She’s nostalgic, we know her, we love her. We wore her in grade school and now as adults with our own kids. I like wearing cords with flip flops at this time of year, when it’s cool outside but the sun warms you enough to let skin out with a crop top or bare toes. I mixed cord here with a light white cotton top, flip flops and a straw bag - so all of the pieces surrounding the one “fall” garment are “summer” but it’s amazing because I feel like this is the one time of year that we can do this.
A colorful cord top with a crochet skirt is next; I wore this with jellies and a belt bag that I pulled out of retirement. I used this bag when I was still carrying Philomena everywhere because it left my hands free. I love the vibes of this outfit because it really feels like Indian Summer - even down to way the sun is shining. It’s so wild to me that we can dress to match our environment in ways that go beyond temperature, you can also match the lighting, golden hour. I know you know what I mean.
WOOL. Nothing says cozy up together in front of the fire with a frothy cappuccino like wool. It’s the reason most people love fall and save their pennies for a Fall wardrobe. Wool is worth it. My vintage cow sweater was probably the score of the century, its just about as kitsch as I am as a person. I love it with my doily skirt because it really feels like something a farmer’s wife would wear on top and something she would set her lamp on on the bottom. I did a 1920s flapper bag for good measure and my amazing fisherman sandals that were $10.
Who knew I could wear a white crochet beach skirt in so many ways? Honestly I saw Lucy Williams in this one and just went totally crazy for it. I feel like I will use it for years to come. I did a soft white polo long sleeve this time and my red jellies. It feels fresh but still warm, and thats what we need this time of year.
I’ll be back in two weeks with some pumpkin patching ideas. Until then you can shop my picks in my storefront (which I update constantly) HERE. Can’t wait to see you all then! Love you, Megan
