We all have them.
Every fashion girl out there will tell you she has spent time looking to those in some sort of spotlight for inspiration on how to get dressed.
Someone who mirrors a part of who we are or want to be. With style, the presentation is the hardest part of putting together the look. You think about it deeply, you study the material and then you put it on; does the outfit portray the message you were hoping for? Can you wear it with confidence? Sometimes I feel like my looks are research paper presentations my mom (an English teacher of 20 years) assigned to one of her classes. It’s the same thing, we’ve all been there. Now we are all grown up and we have to do it again, but this time, it’s way more personal.
The easiest thing would be to copy and paste styles onto our own bodies but that will lead to inauthenticity and now that I’m in my mid (late???) 30s, I’m finally at a place where I really don’t care what other’s think of me and I’d rather just feel like myself. It took a long time to get here. If you know me personally, you know my people pleaser gene RUNS DEEP. Without getting too mushy it’s definitely all to the credit of my husband for giving me the confidence to be myself without regret.
There are however many icons I draw inspiration from. Some are influencers on instagram, others are celebrities (mostly from the 90s and 2000s which, of course, were my formative years).
Let’s start with Kate Moss. I mean, there is no one else really, right? Kate is the first place I saw whimsy and edge done together effortlessly. She meant to do it, but it didn’t look like she was trying. She is the original mesh queen, and a walking ironic scope of adjectives. She does the edgy leather jacket below with a very whimsical sheer skirt and sporty sneakers. Her hair is undone as well which adds to the look. There’s so much to take from this one look alone. The yellow dress is one of my favorite looks of all time, its whimsical but classic somehow. Her hair feels regal and yet her makeup is undone, giving way to her specific grunge presentation. There are so many juxtapositions in one place.
I have this mesh skirt, which you have seen before, coupled with a leather jacket which is very minimal in cut, all through the lens of Kate - minimal edge and whimsy in a modern way. Kate probably would have worn sneakers with this outfit but I’m Megan and I am more of a socks and loafers kind of gal. It’s a reminder to stay true to yourself even when drawing inspiration from someone else.
Carrie Bradshaw. I mean, if you didn’t grow up on Sex and the City, what were you doing? Obviously a fictional character, but so important. She’s the reason I moved to New York City. She’s the reason I am always completely drawn to crazy colors, especially worn together and she’s the reason the flower brooch was ever a *thing* at all. Carrie is mismatched and unexpected in every outfit she puts on and she layers texture in a way that will go into history books, I promise you that.
I’ve been wearing crazy colors as long as I can remember. This likely came from my mother and grandmother (article detailing that here) who both love patterns and color. But when I saw Carrie Bradshaw do it, it opened my eyes of what could be done beyond Wet Seal racks and Delias catalogs. Of course I’d love to wear Fendi and even Pucci head to toe, but I’m a stay at home mom on a budget, okay? I did the flower brooch here because no one has ever done it better than Carrie, or even SJP. I love the red with the yellow because its unexpected and the socks with my mules are just enough mismatch to hit the style words I was aiming for.
Jane Birkin was the foremother of signature style. THE BASKET BAG. I mean, come on! She wore it everywhere, to fancy events and to literal picnics with her family. She emulates masculinity in a feminine way, don’t ask me how, just look at the photos. I love her style because she was also very coastal in many ways but not in a literal sense. Of course, I’m such a jeans girl and Jane made jeans glamorous. Her style is simple, which reminds me that I don’t have to overdo it all the time. Many say she was the embodiment of French girl style.
Last but definitely not least, and probably closest to my everyday style. Sometimes it’s best to remember the power of a good outfit and the confidence you exude when wearing said outfit. I’ve worn this ensemble many times, the only thing I ever really switch up is the bag. There is something so powerful about signature style and the confidence you gain from knowing what feels like you.
I would love to hear who you all are pulling inspiration from! Message me or leave it in the comments below. Love you all, xoxo - Megan
