Event dressing for hot moms who still have to function after all the fun
Concerts, picnic dinners, baseball games and ice cream runs
When my husband asked me to see Michael Marcagi in Cincinnati I felt the excited quickening of my breath followed by the inevitable sinking dread. For a front row seat into the movie inside my brain, stay tuned; it went something like this: “Michael Marcagi, I love him! We have to see him now before he gets too big and the venues are huge and tickets are expensive!”… “Oh dear, we’ll be away from the kids for almost a full day, there is no way we can do that”… “It’s in Cincinnati, our favorite city, we haven’t been back and out for a date night in 7 years, Vine Street sounds so fun!”… “Who is available to watch our children, what will they do while we are gone and it will include bedtime so who can handle that?” … “Cool dinner spot followed by a small concert in Cincy, WHAT OUTFIT CAN I WEAR!”
If you’re a mom or even a mom of pets, you know the crazy planning that goes into any given moment away from your house. You know the guilt that follows and even the financial preparation it takes to do dinner, concert and then pay a babysitter. Luckily this time, my in-laws were in town so we knew our kids were well cared for.
Another part about being a parent (that no one really tells you) is that even if you do get a moment away, no matter how exhausted you are from said event, when you get home you have to parent. I’m so happy we went but when we got home at 12:50 am, our daughter woke up at 2 and proceeded to run about the house, singing, until 6am. Honestly, I had had enough musical entertainment for the night so this was not my favorite thing to deal with; alas, it comes with the gig.
It was pretty sticky outside when we left, but I knew it was going to get cooler as the night progressed so I went with a long sleeve crop top (it’s honestly more like a bra) and this high waisted skirt from H&M. It feels very Matteau and is extremely reasonably priced. I did a naked sandal and a beaded bag, which felt summery but also hot-girl enough for a date with my husband. We ate at Abigail Street in OTR, if you’re ever in Cincinnati, it’s a DO NOT MISS.
I think another really functional option for an event is (something that you’ve seen me do so many times before) one fancy piece paired with a very-laid-back-everything-else. I wore this black frilly top with men’s boxer shorts, mesh sparkly flats and my bead bag to a picnic dinner. It looks thoughtful but still effortless because of the element of leaving at least one piece super casual.
Next up: ice cream runs with your kids. This is something we’re doing all summer and it’s usually not a place we have time to put a lot of thought into. If you follow me on instagram you saw this there first, but I like a very oversized button-down or top with teeny tiny shorts and barely there sandals. It gives you really great range of motion for being with your babies but also makes you look good.
Did any other mom out there sign their kids up for sports and not realize how many games and practices you were committing to? I mean these are six year olds! This fact alone gives me about four additional days a week that I need to plan outfits for. I have been loving a short dress with bike shorts under it. I just bought these from the Mango x Siedres collab. I will probably do these with an oversized button up as well or maybe just a bra because it’s summer and please let your skin see that sun babes! Contrary to popular belief, we need to soak that in, just don’t overdo it. I hope you’re enjoying all the beautiful things and events that come with the sunshine and this time of year. Again thank you for being here, love you all! xoxo, Megan
